MULTI VISION
artist's statement
When I create I try to see things from a universal point of view. For example, Japan and Western countries can sometimes be opposite in the ways we communicate (introvert/extrovert, subtle/bold, less/more, silence/noise etc). When different cultures merge, we become more open to new ideas. Positive things can be negative, and negative things can be positive! What is right and wrong? This special space encourages freedom and possibility - the perfect environment for creation.
My experience of these opposing cultural styles, values, and ways of seeing things has made me open to new ideas and experimentations in my own art - the space between, destabilization, fragmentation. Is silence filled with potential expression, or a pregnant nothingness?
I am interested in pause, silence, noise, and stillness– I derive pleasure from these, in both my artistic taste and aural experience. Silence can be full of meaning and contemplative space... The happening between the lines (as in Annie Baker, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Jarmusch or Wim Wenders' work), the exploration of being present and alive – in particular, slower, quieter, smaller. Annie Baker suggests that "Even when it's at rest, it's active.” Similarly, MA (間), the space-between-and-full-of-life, is a unique aspect of Japanese culture. I hope that we can feel and appreciate this in our wild world!
At the same time, I create to feel alive and open to the world - collaborating to make an impact on society in playful ways, and celebrating the magic of being human. My work can be very honest and genuine (often comedic) as I challenge myself to be brave enough to remain open and share my strange ideas and sensitivities. In this, I think I am hoping for mutual benefit! Thank you so much for joining me on this journey. I look forward to connecting with you.
